Rome begins as a cluster of hill villages on the Tiber. Tradition names seven kings — Romulus, Numa, Tullus Hostilius, Ancus Marcius, Tarquinius Priscus, Servius Tullius, and Tarquinius Superbus — who lay down religion, law, the calendar, and the first city walls before a violent revolution ends monarchy forever.
